2011 September 5th - 17th Newfoundland 👍

Dateline: 2011  September 5th - 17th Newfoundland

This trips travelling map

Just another trip, Newfoundland
Melanie & Brian
We are here in St Johns as we sponsored something or other, and got a free return trip on Westjet

We have flown out ahead of Mel & Brian, and I decided
to head up to signal Hill for a power walk

Not to wait for them before I climbed the Signal Hill

You have a great view of the harbour from here, and can see
by this entrance why it's so well protected

Next day, up in the hills above St. John. You can see
Signal Hill, where I was yesterday as the far off hill

We are now quorate, so investigate the down
town core, about 2 blocks of it
Some great restaurants where I have my first
Cod au gratin. Now one of my favourites

Then, with our hire car, we are on the road
NF looks great in the summer, but this is how
most people live, and winter.
Well, you can understand the dreadful abuse
and incest et al
We head south to a bird colony
Totally ours, except for the birds of course
Desolate, bleak, windy, noisy and covered
in bird shit

Like a lot of NF weather, even in summer
cold and grey

Placentia can you believe?
We climb a hill and look at

Old cannons
Oh well
Cape Bonavista. Complete with lighthouse
Cape Bonavista downtown.

We had a B&B as seen here. Dire Eh?

NF marketing will paint an idyllic picture of this place,
but in reality, after the tourists have gone, its hardscrabble

Definitely pretty, but you are thrown against the elements here
We didn't wait for winter. Most of these folks have no choice

Didn't see a one

I totally blew the structure of the trip
We had to bring Mel & Brian back to St. Johns early
so we never got to the other side of the island

We have dropped Mel & Brian at the airport and have
recycled our tracks back to
 North Twillingate
Where we have followed the rumours of
Catching a few icebergs

It's pretty mush totally austere out here
This being further up the coast
Well, we were pretty excited even with these sad relics

Pretty slim pickins for the tourists here
This was the only cafe for miles around

Apparently, all these so called icebergs are the remnants of a super huge
iceberg from off greenland from a few years back

Not much left now though

Almost gone but quite forgotten

Sad remnants are all that remain

Well, we haven't really seen icebergs before
Then we head out again, to Fogo Island,

And then onto a really ricketty rusty old tub to Fogo
I think it was free, but I wasn't sure it would make it

There's not only not much here on the island

But neither of our cell phones work here
Only Telus

So I'm driving around looking for a phone box can you
believe
Surprisingly, there's very little in the way of B&B's here

I also have no idea how I found it.
I think that there were only 3 places for rent on the island
and only one had  room.
The ferry was done for the day
And so we head back to St. Johns.
Back to thew Battery Cafe where.......
Finally!. We have been looking for Moose since we arrived, even heading out to the local forest at sunset to track the bloody thing.
Nothing, not even on the highway known for many vehicle/ Moose casualties
Maybe this was the remnants of one of them.
We meet a bit of one between two halves of a bun. Oh well
