This trips travelling map
Just another year, Family, friends etc. NOT in Southern Africa
January - December 2000
The theory was that come January 1st, 2000, everything programming would have either exploded, or imploded meaning I had nothing better to do than hang out with the family, and maybe, head off somewhere for 6 months
It didn't work out quite like that, I was so busy, even to the point of having to find a stand in to go to a friends wedding as I schlepped away coding before we left on July 3rd, heading for Johannesburg, South Africa

Here begins our first totally outrageous family adventures
We arrived back in Toronto in the middle of a blizzard
The woman who looked after the place had gone and we didn't have a key
I guess we got in
It was a real blizzard, complete with all our gear and no way to get in. Somehow, we did...
I'm up and out next day |
To indulge my Canadian. December 21st |
Somehow, we still threw our Christmas Eve get together together, with tree |
Here's my note to my many and varied mates:
Subject: We are too lazy to write up our years fun activities
Greetings all.....
We are all back safe sound and heavier in body mass, and much lighter in assets after our excessive trek.
Due to the current lack of pressure of work, the Koplimae/ Smith family have
not prepared our usual (and usually ignored) Christmas encyclical.
This is totally within our expectations.
In general, the first half of 2000 was cold, then hot.
The rest of the time we spent following our mad and quixotic quest into Africa
(long since gone) and Europe.
Today being Christmas Eve, we notice that it will probably be very difficult to
write anything to get to youse folks by Christmas. So everyone can relax and
enjoy themselves without any guilt about reading the details this year.
To all the people we have met, new friends, old friends, people we would gladly
avoid if we had a second chance, all others who we have ignored or pretended to
like, plus that small remainder of people not in the above, we wish you a fun
filled holiday season, and we all look forward to talking, drinking, and
generally embarrassing ourselves in the coming season and next year.
The Smiths, Koplimaes and Koplimae-Smiths
PS, it's a lot easier e-mailing from Canada than on the road - expect more if I
get bored next year.

Editors Note:
And......... many, MANY years later, when I have nothing better to do than revisit these 25 year old blogs, this time to finally add many more pix from the video camera, for all you folks totally devoid of a realistic view of entertainment.
Here they are:
A few days at the Clays, boys fighting and complaining |
Girls cooperating and ignoring boys |
I seem to remember some decent skiing at Horseshoe |
End of January recital |
For Kayla |
Well, she certainly seems to enjoy it |
Dedicated to a life of music? Hmmmmm, maybe |
New York, NY |
Supposedly a surprise for Shems birthday |
Apparently it wasn't |
Your hairy correspondent |
Here we are on the upper bits of the statue of liberty |
After having climbed right to the top of the torch It was incredibly cold up there |
Aiden, pretty much on top form |
Doing bars |
He enjoyed it, but apparently |
Never felt that he was good enough |
He and Keith, his still sorta friend |
Went to the same competitions |
Here on rings |
Well, as ever, they both had all the opportunities |
Here on horse, |
or something |
It certainly took a lot of their time |
And Norm was a great coach |
This was Aidens never to be repeated |
Athletics zenith. Aiden with fellow friends. March 26th Gymnastics competition |
Just before he sliced his leg open |
Kayla's riding competition, May 19th |
At the Halton stables |
Aiden here in support mode |
Kayla going through the |
finer points of equestrian competitions |
With suitable attitude |
I know, it's black, but squit a bit and Aiden's life changing mangled leg can just be seen |
Meanwhile, |
back at the ranch |
Kayla struts her |
Equestrian competences |
And gets a blue ribband |
Well, she got something |
Plus a lot of friends |
With similar interests |
I guess that what parents want to give to their kids |
Toronto school board |
Offered kids interested |
in music, additional fun stuff for a week |
Here, Aiden at the Boyne |
Well, if the kids are interested |
Why not? An alternate group from school mates should round out anyone, right? |
For music ensembles, there always |
seemed to be a great feeling of |
being part of a team. Well, maybe
